Ten years ago, we built a front porch for the Loverings in Lincoln, MA. At the time, they were looking for a place to sit and enjoy their front yard and welcome guests – rain or shine. They wanted to enhance their plain front façade with a porch that blended with their home’s colonial architecture. The porch must look as if were part of the original construction of their classic, 19th century New England home. It should be large enough to seat two couples but not so large that it overpowered the home’s classic appearance. After some careful planning, detailed drawings and specifications, the Loverings let us enhance their home.
There were two keys to achieving these goals: respecting the home’s original architecture and paying careful attention to the construction details. Indeed, at Advantage Design & Construction, we find these principles – respect and care – to be vital to all our projects. So, for the Loverings, we chose 6” wide (rot proof) pine flooring, square columns with simple, proportional trim, shaped mahogany railings, a flat beadboard ceiling, and a 5/12 hip roof that mimicked their main roof. And you be the judge; look at the before and after photos:

How did we do?
The best compliment came several months after we built the front porch. Close friends of the Loverings came over to visit. They walked up the front walkway, as they had many, many times before, and then up onto the porch. But they did not recognize that the porch was new – and even began to argue that it had been there for many years. Well, thank you. That’s what puts the joy in my work. That’s why I am in this business.
